So here are some shots of the first squad of nine guardsmen.  Robes are done, metals have base coat and first metal coat.  They will get a highlight next then rust coat then a bit of another metal highlight.  To make my life hopefully easier, all these guys will get the same skin tone, to match one of the command groups whom they will accompany.  The next squad in line will get the other skin color.  I tried to do the robes by memory from the command groups, but ended up having to redo the last three or so layers, once I put some of the finished cultists in front of me.

Enjoy

Finished the rusty steel effects today.  There are a couple small bits on some of them that will be made to look like corroded brass/copper.  Skin is yet to be started then there isn't much left on them.

So here are some more shots.  I haven't had the time I would have liked to spend on these guys lately.  Skin is almost done, two layers left.  As stated in a previous post, rusty steel parts are done.  I'm really happy with the way the gauntlets look, all rusty in places.

It does look cool and tunnelly, just a little hard to see the detail and work you've put in.

Skin and leather leggings are done now.  Just have weapon staves and some little detail bits to do.

: leadhead February 28, 2012, 05:54:43 AM
Getting frustratingly close now.  All that is left are the staves and three guys have some little glass vials to paint.  And so little time to play.

Feb 28, finished squad except for a bit of work left to do on the bases.  Look for pics soon.
: Re: Dark Brethren WIP Stuff (Updated Feb 19 more pics)
: leadhead March 07, 2012, 06:45:01 AM
Well no pictures as of yet but, I have decided to complete the 'monumental' task of assembling and converting the rest of the squads before painting the next one.  Part of the reason for this is that I am making a reserve tank for my air compressor, which I use to spray on my testor's white primer.  Converting the compressor to work with a tank has made it a pain in the butt to convert back to directly connect an airbrush.  I may even do a 'how to/this is what I did' for the air tank.

Back on track.  The second straight out of the box squad is fully assembled and put on bases.  The squad with double handed flails is 5/9 completed with four waiting for weapons.  I only had four of the flails that I wanted the whole squad to use so I have to wait for the rest to come in.  The fifth is the champion with a slightly absurdly sized flail, but a hero needs to stand out a bit.  I just started on the squad with single hand close combat weapons and shields.  I'm thinking of calling them Helmsplitters or Skull Spikers (or something) due to the weapons I've come up with.  I have two done, except for attaching the shields.  Need to make a suitable weapon to make the hero stand out.  Will get pics when I can.
: Re: Dark Brethren WIP Stuff (Now with fresh conversions Mar 11)
: leadhead March 11, 2012, 10:37:13 PM
Here are some conversions I've done.  Two squads, nine troops.  Eight regular guys with the same weapons and a champion with a different, but hopefully related-ish weapon.  There is even a nifty pic for scale purposes with one guardsman and three of Trollforged's Demon Worms (I have nine to keep unit consistency)  I still have one squad left to assemble/convert.

First, the squad with hand weapons and the shields they will have with the champion.  Shields and weapons are from GW Dark Elf warriors box.

Second, flail guys.  Flails are from GW Empire Flagellants box.

Third, I bet this guy's thinking 'Dang, good thing these are on my side!'

Have been working on the second unconverted squad.  Their robes are done and after what felt like far too many attempts, their steel bits are done as well.  The only difference between this squad and the first one is this second squad have masks, which I've made metal.  I'll try and post a pic soon.

The first of the next squad of guardsmen.  This is the final squad I currently have to assemble.  The guys with the flails have been primed and lined.  This squad is inspired by the Aiel from WoT.  There will be nine guys with javelins, possibly the champion will have a javelin in each hand, with his shield on his back and there will be a standard bearer, drummer and priest in the squad as well.  The hand holding the javelin was a bugger because I hollowed out his hand and curled it a bit to hold the weapon better.  It looks funny pointed behind him, but my excuse is he is raising it to throw.  Javelins are by crocodile games and shields are skaven clanrat's.  Not sure yet if I will change the shield at all.  Any suggestions?  My putty skills aren't great though.

Pretty good pictures considering they were taken with my less than a month old new cell phone.

Cool. I just started reading the wheel of time from the beginning again. I got to about book 10 then forgot who everyone was and lost the idea of the plot. Hopefully the last book will be out by the time I get to it. Lucky I'm a slow reader. These look really great. I take it the javelins on the back are from Croc games too? Nice stuff.

Oh yes, congratulations Dark Lord Leadhead.
: Re: Dark Brethren WIP Stuff (New July 16)
: leadhead July 17, 2012, 05:05:18 AM
Yeah, the javelins in the quiver thing and the loose one are part of the same set.  You get five sprues per set, each one with two quivers and one loose.  Needless to say I had to buy two sets, as I didn't fancy sculpting my own javelins.

Been a long time since you broke the 1000 mark isn't it beefcake?  Or the 2000 for that matter.

:D I've only been on here about 4 years I think. So not doing to bad really. I made javelins for a conversion out of old spear tips from GW's skelton horde boxed set way back

Little pictureless update.  Have managed to convert some more of the squad, I only have two left actually.  The champ is done.  Instead of two javelins, I repositioned the right arm slightly to be different than the other two guys of that body type.  In his left hand he is now holding a sword.  I even gave him the sword from a tunnel priest that I hadn't used yet.  I still haven't decided on the shield or no shield option.  I was wondering if it would look stupid attached to his right arm.  I've seen other minis holding a weapon and shield in one hand, and didn't think it odd looking.  Off to see if I can get another guy done before dinner (or both).

Well it was not until after dinner, but the squad is ready for the next step.  Base filling, a bit of gs here and there, then primering.

So now that the flail squad is done, I am going to do their command group, the command for the pick troops and the Dark Preacher.  Who is this 'Preacher' you ask.  I decided that the Cult of Inevitable Decay (that's what I've decided to call them) needs someone whose duty it is to bring more members into the fold.  He roams far and wide speaking the word of the Worm and of how all beings truly only have one thing in common, death and decay.  His god is strengthened by the demise of all, and that all should devote themselves to the Worm and further His goals.     That's all I'll say about that for now.

PS They've all been primed now, ready for the next step.
: Re: Dark Brethren WIP Stuff (New July 16)
: beefcake November 06, 2012, 06:52:14 AM
Are you going to use the blights in your cult. Over-zealous members that have given their bodies to the worm.

Hadn't actually thought about using the blights.  But I do have something along that line in the works.  Maybe something for the future.

Got the two command groups and the preacher lined today, after the big concrete pour went down, and almost lost it all on one section of the wall.  But it held up after nearly falling over.
: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread
: leadhead November 12, 2012, 08:34:55 PM
I discovered something that could be rather irksome.  I have come to the realization that I can possibly totally skip two different layers when painting the robes, without affecting the overall look.  This notion didn't come to me until after I had done both the questionable layers on the group I am currently working on. :tantrum:  The most agravating part about it is I only have one squad of guardsmen left yet to see paint.  I think before I make any rash decisions, I need to line up every painted guardsman and look at their robes as I think they've evolved a bit since the first priest.

PS all the steel parts of them are done.  I do those first, after lining.

Here are some shots of the two command groups in the works.  Robes and steel parts are done at this point.  Also the first pics of the Dark Preacher.

So there we go.  The preacher is Andy's Necromancer obviously.  His pointing hand is from one of the priests in the background, as they both got swords.  The book, key and skull on a rope are from the box set of GW flagellants.  The necro is a very charismatic figure, and the pose lends itself quite well to what I wanted.  I'm very happy with him and really looking forward to having him finished.  I used the key on a chain because the priests all have a key on their belts, and I felt it fit as a talisman for 'unlocking' (if you will) potential cultist's desire to spread death and decay.  Considering most of the other cultists have a skull on them, why not him too.  Another powerful talisman never hurt, right?

Another update today.     Never have I been this fast.  Preacher only, but his skin is finished.  I went for something different than the rest of the cultists and base coated him with purple mixed into the flesh tone.  I like it, I wanted it to be sort of 'off'.  Pictures came out better than I expected.  Pardon the crotch shot on pic two, sorry.

: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (updated Nov 17)
: Ajsalium November 18, 2012, 03:14:42 PM
Regarding the book, I'd avoid red.

Since he's a special character, you want to draw attention to him. So it's better using a different colour. The browns suggested by Mr Teufel are the most obvious and realistic choices. But you may use something different; I think a rather dark blue would go well. More daring choices would be purple, light greyish blue (dead / pale skin), or even green.

: leadhead November 21, 2012, 05:46:53 AM
Regarding the book, I'd avoid red.

Thanks, I was leaning toward a greenish/rotting skin for the cover.

I have gotten some more done on them.  Leathers are done as well as the skulls and skells on the priest's staves.  I think the next step is to do the brass bits as there are quite a few here and there.  Then it's just a few little bits left before bases.  Also need some new designs for the banners.

I was just looking at the bunch in the case yesterday, thinking how cool they look together.  I'll definately do a full force photo shoot when everything is done.  I'm hoping I can have everything finished before my birthday.  I only have four 'squads' left to do.

Lets see how much progress I can make before I have to go back to work on the second.

Well, with less than 12 hours before I have to be back at work and needing most of that time for sleep, the progress on this last squad stands thus:  Steel parts done, skin done, robes done, leathers done.  Seeing as how they are mostly steel, robes and skin, that puts them over half way done.  Still have to do bronze parts, bones/skulls, glass parts, javelin shafts and poles, drum and banner design.  Then bases.  More progress pics later if I can.

: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (Jan 2, '13)
: leadhead January 03, 2013, 06:23:20 AM
It's two layers.  The first is a thin mix of yellow, green and teal wiped off if too heavy.  Followed by a thin black wash.  Same formula since the first priest I painted.

: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (Jan 2, '13)
: leadhead January 08, 2013, 06:21:58 AM
Well, managed to get the javelin packs mostly painted still have a couple layers to go but they are now attached to the troopers.  Shields are still bare plastic, but they aren't far away.  So darn close, still have to do the banner symbol as well.  I don't think I'll do any emblems on these guy's shields, too small.

: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (Jan 13, '13)
: leadhead January 16, 2013, 03:23:03 PM
Yeah I have four unpainted Heresy figs left.  I haven't changed the count yet because the other eight grubs aren't based yet.  With these last four I need to come up with a better color scheme.  I am not happy with the first four of this kind so I never posted them.  So they'll get repainted with the newly painted ones.
: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (Jan 13, '13)
: leadhead January 20, 2013, 07:54:24 PM
Well I base coated all the eight slugs that I have left to paint/repaint.  Started highlighting, put one next to the other two types of grub and they didn't mesh at all.  So I rebase coated them all.  The ones that were already painted started out brown but came out more gray and flat.  I'm going to go back to brown, after having tried pale purpleish, which didn't fit with the other colors.
: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (Jan 13, '13)
: leadhead February 01, 2013, 05:17:08 AM
Finally, it's been a long time getting here with these last eight slugs.  I started repainting the first four that I wasn't happy with first time, got all eight base coated, tried some highlighting, didn't like it at all, rebase coated, tried more highlighting, didn't like that either, too fecal looking.  So I stripped them down, reprimed tried a new color, with some highlighting, didn't like that either, so rebase coated them again yesterday.  Put on a second layer of the base today, then a bit darker glaze, then a darker wash then a reddish brown wash, then another light wash of the first glaze color, then a light highlight of the base color followed by a much lighter color for the belly/foot.  I think they look far better than first go, so long ago.  Now I need to get pics for here, then do the bases and get finished pics up in the gallery.

So these are the last of the Heresy figures I have for the cult.  I took these with my phone so they suck a bit.  I'll dig out the real camera for the finished shots.  The pics were taken right before I painted the mouths and teeth.  I'm happy with the way they came out, like the other two types, I wanted them to look like they could actually exsist in the real world.

There was something else I wanted to say at this point but it escapes me so on with the show.

: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (Jan 31, '13)
: leadhead February 04, 2013, 12:54:49 AM
Here's the first shot of the first type of giant worms from Trollforged.  These are going to be the same color scheme as the little grubs with red heads.  I decided quite a while ago that the giant worms should be the same species as the smaller ones, just farther along in development.  I'd first gotten the idea before I'd even gotten the first two squads of guardsmen painted back when I only had one of each type.  I'm also thinking that the flail guys will be the prodders for these giant worms.

Enough jibba jabba, the one on the left has base coat and first coat of first highlight.  The right one has base coat and first coat of first highlight on his back only.  It took a really long time as there are tons of little folds and creases in the skin that I wanted to stand out against the highlights.  Sorry jibba jabba'd again.

Will do photos with real camera next time.  They look too brown here.

I was reading through this whole thread and found typos in this post.  So I fixed it.

Little update, no pics yet.  I'll try and get some taken in the next couple of days.  The worms that I posted pics of already are now done, I think.  The greenish giant maggots have now got the completed base coat on them.  The other type has the base coat which took two layers like the other ones, and then two separate color glazes

Been working on the next squad of cultists.  So far, the steel parts are finished, and I have moved on to the brass stuff.  Brass base color is done.

Got the metalic coat on now.

I had hoped to have the cult finished by my birthday, I don't think I'm on track for that anymore.

Been a bit since last post.  Haven't taken any pictures, but brass stuff is done (lots more than any other cultists).  Skin base is done and first highlight on most of them is done too.  Skin tone is blurdy murder because of the tiny details that are done in brass.  Who can figure out what this squad is?!  It's on the forum somewhere.

: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (Mar 11, '13)
: leadhead March 17, 2013, 10:22:50 PM
This post marks the end of any updates to this thread until Andy releases more for the tunnel guard range, or I find something else to add to the cult.  The final squad I was going to do has been scrapped.  The closer I got to the end with this last group, the more I realized, they just didn't quite fit.  I was going to make a squad out of the daemonettes that I'd gotten ready and given arms from the plastic daemonettes box, but parts of the sculpts don't work with the maggot theme.  Mainly the feet and horns on their foreheads.  The daemonettes,  however will not be forgotten and I will be painting them the way I was going to, just with a different loin cloth color and at a bit later date.

Thank you all very much for your support and enthusiasm for my project.  It really took on a life of it's own, and I felt compelled to see it done.  I would get antsy if I had a day off and didn't put down any paint.  It still took more than a year and a half to finish.  The start of it was the Tunnel Dweller, with the first post of my progress on Oct 3 2011.  I'm holding Ink the Troll responsible, for selling him to me, which sparked this madness.  Thank you, Ink.

Now its on to other projects, which have piled up, as they're wont to do.  Thanks again to all for your support.  Watch for complete force photos in the near future.

Obviously Heresy's Deathball Ogres and Cyclops boss.  Going to keep the squad this size due to cost, and you really don't want very many blokes like these guys around.  Stuff'll get wrecked.

They're now wearing primer, and I've cleaned up filled areas that were a bit lumpy, and reprimed those spots.  I do plan on working largely on the project I started while these were being put together.  They will get attention here and there, while other things dry though.
: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (Mar 10, '14)
: leadhead March 11, 2014, 04:12:46 AM
Man, can lining be tedious.  Atleast its done.  Six squads of guardsmen/women and one preacher, each with their own skin tone, makes seven different humanoid skin tones.  Seven members of the Maulers, so each one gets a unique to him skin color.  Might take longer to paint but might look better over all.

Here they are, ready for metal work.

Those are definitely getting there :). Nice tarnish work on the metals.

Having struggled along painting 'monster sized' miniatures myself (Vulkan battlesuits), I can sympathise with the struggles of doing so. I found that because they are so heavy, after a while my thumb joint started aching so I had to limit the length of painting sessions... which doesn't stop the will to get them finished nagging at you :D.

Good work so far and keep it up... when these are finished they will look excellent together with everything else in the cult  .

Thanks, Inso.

I may do the brass parts next, as there aren't going to be that many.  Also, I may do all the common colors before I do the skin.  That way, when I finish a skin tone, that guy is done.

Did manage to get the base color for their leathers done on all but two.  Time for sleeping now, so no pictures today.

Been a while since I've put down some paint.  Dern you minecraft!   Anyhoo, this is a bad photo showing that the cult colors have been started.

Now my tablet has decided it has less than 5% power so has dimmed the screen to barely visible, so I must go charge the thing.

Following my last post, I sat down and finished the Maulers' cult colors.  Skins are next.  This will take some time as each has a different skin tone.

Kept working, base skin color for the boss is done.  Went with the skin used for the Dark Preacher, as the boss Mauler is the cyclops, so is different than the rest of the crew.  Will get a pic with the good camera soon.

Keep up the good work.

So in the latest pictures you can see, due to the stark lighting, the actual base skin tone that had purple added to it, show through on the brightest areas.  I have gone back after taking those photos, and have finished the second layer of skin.  Even though this guy is rather large, the muscle groups are too and are well defined, so a lot of guess work is eliminated when doing highlighting.  I will try and get another pic tomorrow.  Or at least before the next layer goes on.

Next layer done too.  Skin layers are going to go faster now so I think the next photo will be with skin finished.

Skin is finished, but is washed out by the lighting.  Will try and get better photos as the group progresses.

While I was preping to start the next mauler, I discovered something.  I hadn't used as many skin tones as I thought.  So, the regular troops will have three skin colors.  Two guys to one color.  Makes it faster I guess.

Now, I know I haven't taken any new photos yet, but, the skin on the two Maulers I've been working on the last few days is finished.  I also have the skin base coat just finished on the next two too.  Seeing as how I did most everything else on them previously, the only things left to do after skin is mouths and hair for those with it.  Then I will be free  Then I can start on the next project, which may end up being a netherlord.  No promises.

Now a Netherlord painted in the same sort of colours as your cult would be an interesting scheme...

Rusty steel is a given, I think.  It seems to have become my trademark.  Maybe with some strange color undertones to it.  As well as corroded brass.

Here are five of the seven Maulers with their skin finished.  This was the only picture I could get before the camera died.

Nudge.  Got to keep this thread alive for the Terror Grubs and Maggotmen.
: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (May 26, '14)
: beefcake February 26, 2015, 04:01:43 AM
So how many maggotman are you getting then? I haven't done my pledge calculator yet but will be I for probably a couple of packs. More I imagine though as I have most of the other heresy minion level stuff.
: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (May 26, '14)
: leadhead February 26, 2015, 05:39:32 AM
Four packs of maggotmen.  So, if they're still in three packs, I will have 12, full squad-unit-whatever.  All six of my large monster slots are taken by Terror Grubs, obviously. :silly. Unrelated to the cult are four packs of lurkers, four packs of mites and Madame Nur'Gabba to fill out my pledge and add ons.  Not to forget bonus Boris.

: beefcake February 26, 2015, 06:37:15 AM
I really want nurgabba too but don't know if I can stretch that much. I've got a pledge from fractured dimensions coming sometime, hopefully, with a big fly demon in it much like the tunnel dweller but fatter and as a fly not a maggot.

I knew full well I could not, but I also knew she would likely never be as inexpensive again.  So I kicked in anyway.  Very much looking forward to seeing how she develops in the months to come.
: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (2016)
: leadhead October 06, 2016, 05:49:29 AM
Another nudge to keep this thread 'active'.  Now that I've gotten my maggotmen and terror grubs, I've changed my signature to reflect the new upcoming cult members, 30 more in total.  I've counted 12 mites into the cult but haven't fully decided on their permanence in the group, so it may only be 18.  One day I will begin adding progress pictures again.

Will Madame be part of the Cult (or perhaps their god?) Did you get the Tunnel Dweller with your lot?
: Re: Cult of Inevitable Decay WIP Thread (2016)
: leadhead October 06, 2016, 04:00:34 PM
I'm going to keep Madame separate from the cult.  They worship the Tunnel Dweller.  I got a metal one from Ink the Troll way back when.  That's actually what sparked the whole thing.  I want Madame to be her own beautrid piece.  Beautiful + putrid = beautrid. copyright
