Sagunt and I both had the same idea...but he beat me to it here:

http://forum-of-doom.com/index.php?topic=11295.msg184706#msg184706

It has taken me a while to finally get a pack of Pig-Iron heads but I finally got a whole load of them (the jumbo head pack):

http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/hd9-jumbo-mixed-head-sprues-p-22.html

I haven't gone as far as Sagunt did (with weapon swaps) but I have taken a different approach to the conversions.

I'll post pix soon!

The only trouble is, I don't have any ready to paint at the moment so I'll be busy converting the next batch tomorrow (that will be 6 with shotguns)...and while I'm doing that, I'll work on the sculpts too.

Oh...My...God...!

I just bought tanks.

11 of them :D.

...and they are perfect for my tunnel fighting plans!

You've gotta love E-bay.  Now all I have to do is wait patiently for them to arrive .

Fortunately, I have some more Grymn to convert (another 11 arrived on Friday) so I have stuff to keep me busy while I wait.

I've finished the 6 shot-gunners...I'll get pix tomorrow (they aren't dry yet).

I haven't worked on the robot since the last pic but I'll get to work on him at some point...

All these troops and ideas and I haven't even organised them into units yet...I guess I'll have to do it at some point and one of the main things will be having robots as part of each squad.
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: beefcake March 07, 2010, 05:58:13 AM
So are the robots planned on being fighting machines (dare i say dreadnaughts...) or will their purpose be more of a tunnel maintenance machine that the tunnel fighters protect. I don't think I'm explaining myself well here.
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso March 07, 2010, 08:57:45 AM
The robots will be 'disposable'.They will be very heavily armoured and their main purpose is to advance in front of the Grymn with over-large riot shields to protect the Grymn from incoming fire.

The shields will fold away down the sides of the robot when not in use but will fold out when needed.

I am not (at the moment) thinking of having combat robots...but that may change if I am successful with the others.

I like what you have done there Inso. A moving barricade is certainly very useful.

As for a walking comms officer you could use the em4 robot/mechs as the basis. Alternatively the pig iron command squad robot is rather nice.

There is a serious lack of good robots/cyborgs out there, well that arn't terminator wannabe's anyway.

I thought they looked a lot like giant mole-rats and as a result, it seemed like they were tailor made for a tunnel force.

I still have a couple of them left...it is difficult to use 2 scratching ones without them looking too samey...BUT that means I have 2 to convert into big puppies :).

They are very nice :)

Do you mind if I ask a more prosaic question?  How do you do your sandy bases?  They always look very good.
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso May 04, 2010, 06:43:03 PM
Really?  It must be the Cornish sand :).

First I paint the base and let it dry.  I then paint on PVA glue and then sprinkle on my Cornish sand (Straight from Church Cove beach), tapping off the excess and then letting it dry.  I then base coat with a watery coat of Bestial Brown, let that dry and then dry brush with Vomit brown.  Chaos Black goes around the rim to finish it off.

The sand I use is multicoloured and the watered down basecoat allows a small amount of variation in colour before the dry brush.  Depending on whether I want variation, I'll sometimes sculpt GS blobs on the base to add some extra texture...

All in all, really, REALLY basic :).

Glad you like them though :).
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: sagunt May 09, 2010, 07:51:23 PM
I thought you were only temporarily stationed in Cornwall.

Played cricket at uni with a man from that region.  What an accent!
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso May 09, 2010, 08:30:16 PM
I'm not in Cornwall any more...I just made sure that I collected a nice pot full of sand before I left :).

The accent isn't too bad...not when you hail from Somerset ;)...

On to other things, I've had a change of heart about the tunnel fighters.  I will not be using the panda or 'cartoon' robot conversion as I don't think they fit in with the uniformity of the army...that means I need troops for the command squad so I've started converting them.  I still need a few more but here are the first five to join the commander:

From the left I have a pair of plasma rifles, a bodyguard and then a pair of heavy flame-throwers.  The squad will be finished off with three more bodyguard conversions, one of my comms robots and a shield robot.

With a change of direction comes a few different choices and I've finally managed to paint a small unit of these:

They are Vulkan Battlesuits from Warzone...with a few minor modifications to the head area.

Once my Grymn arrive from the good people at HF, I will have enough to finish the command squad.

I hope you like the new additions :).

A long coat is on my list, too.

Have you got a shot by shot of the construction of his left hand?  I'm struggling with that.

Good to see the Vulkans again.  They're fine for some.

The flamers are birlliant but the plasma aren't very visible.  Heve you got shots with them turned away from camera?
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso May 09, 2010, 09:01:54 PM
Sorry...no construction pix of the hand and no better shot of the plasma rifles I'm afraid :(.

There will be better pix of the five troops a bit later in the week when they are finished :).
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: beefcake May 10, 2010, 10:11:16 AM
The Vulkans look great. I also like the trenchcoat guy too. Not too keen on the flamers, the weapons look a little strange to me. Do they have some sort of fuel tank with them as well. It doesn't look like there isone from the pic. I can't wait to see your army in all it's glory. :D

I really like plasma rifles (my have to try doing one  :wry: )  not to sure about the flamers wouldn't a single large barrel be a better option than 2 small ones ? or maybe that's just me. Apart from that  love um
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso May 14, 2010, 04:10:12 PM

The Dante flamer is designed to act as a normal flamer but with the option of using a second nozzle for a 'flood' effect.  The use of the second nozzle would be considered as a one or two shot option due to there only being a standard sized fuel container on the body of the weapon itself.  This weapon (much like the plasma-rifle) is a prototype weapon under test and once the trials are complete work will progress to make both the nozzles permanent use and also to have a separate fuel tank to cope with the larger fuel use.

Hence...twin nozzles ;).

I have deliberately attached these weapons to the command squad because of their trial nature.
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)

I bow before your explanation. Do they extra beer ration for carring prototype weapons  :silly
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso June 06, 2010, 08:10:29 PM
I haven't forgotten these...here is the start of another bunch of Clankers:

I fully expect these to completely dissolve...they are afflicted with a bit of lead-rot so I'm not too confident they will stay painted for long.  That said, once they start dissolving, I won't have to worry about battle damage ;).
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: sagunt June 06, 2010, 08:24:41 PM
Is the lead-rot a form of corrosion or is there something else going on?  Are newer alloys less susceptible to it or do we expect all our metal minis to suffer the same, slow death?
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso June 06, 2010, 08:43:56 PM
I think it is oxidisation of the lead content in older miniatures.  If you look at lead (like you find on lead roofing) then when it goes on it is bright and shiny but after time it goes a powdery grey...I think that is what happens to older miniatures.

I could be completely wrong though...
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: sagunt June 06, 2010, 09:15:44 PM
So, if it's oxidation, would sealing it with paint prevent that?

Of course, now we're working with minis of alloys not so fully leaded, right?
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: mcfonz June 06, 2010, 10:19:28 PM
I know its hassle but if its only on the limbs why not try and replicate/reproduce them. Would cutting away the afflicted area help any?

I don't think I have ever seen a case of lead rot. Maybe the minis I have owned have all been produced post high lead content who knows.
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso June 06, 2010, 10:55:42 PM
They are covered in it. I scraped most of it off but it would have been impossible to remove it all.  I'm not too worried as I have another 16 of them so I won't run out of them :)...  They are also fairly easy to paint so if it does go to ore, I won't be too upset due to not having to put too much effort into them.
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: beefcake June 07, 2010, 04:10:07 AM
They could look quite cool asa  sceneray piece. A remnant of an older battle now gone to rust. :D Nothing goes to waste
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: sagunt June 07, 2010, 04:56:10 AM
So, InSo, I'm wondering if it's literally oxidation or some other corrosion or degradation.  If it's truly the oxygen causing it, I would think sealing them in whatever way we can would stop it.  If it's the alloy itself breaking down, there's nothing to be done.

Before priming the next one, try scrubbing (perhaps even soaking) it in vinegar or alcohol to completely clean the surface and get a good bond for your paints.

How long does it take before you see changes in the surface?
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso June 07, 2010, 06:36:58 AM
I really have no idea...these are the first ones I have ever had with lead rot.  I am certainly no expert!

Luckily, I only have the three rotten ones; the rest are fine :).
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Graeme June 07, 2010, 12:00:28 PM
Lead rot is caused by acetic acid (vinegar). It is in most modern materials that contain PVA; cardboard, foam, model paints and varnishes. The acetic acid acts as a catalyst so the reaction keeps on going. The end results in lead ii oxide ( white lead which is highly toxic). The best treatment is remove the affected parts and to store the figure with plenty of ventilation. If you store old lead figures in boxes and on opening them smell vinegar you have lead rot.
: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = :)
: Inso June 12, 2010, 05:48:33 PM

You know when it's lead rot. It eats whole sections of casting away, small joints are completely consumed causing figures to fall apart at the elbows and knees and large sections of detail are lost. Fortunately this only seems to happen to figures with a high lead content cast before the mid eighties not the more modern alloys. The best prevention is adequate ventilation.

There is going to be a Grymn civil war soon when all of the Grymn Inso has decide they are going to riot over which ones he treasures the most!  :D

Nice army so far Inso, although this is just a fraction of the true massed hords of the shorties you have.

Ah, but do they know that?

What happens when you switch the light off at night? Do you ever go back to the painting desk to find a miniature or two not exactly where you thought you left them?

I did one night, one of Andy's trenchcoaters was amongst some GW orlock's with two of them knocked over on their side . . . . . now I have placed a few obsticles in the way to make their assault a little more difficult this time . . . .

Unfortunately, I didn't get very far with the latest tunnel fighter squad this week:

But the Drone squad has fared a little better...and yes, the Aerial Drones ARE that small :) :

I just have to sort out the bases on all of the Drones and paint the controller and that will be another little squad finished !

The latest finished 'basic' squad...Pink Squad :) :

Only another two basic squads and a close combat squad and it's on to the weirder units again :) ...sappers, logistics, field police, engineers...

The Tunnel Fighters have gone topside and have enlisted the help of a mech...or two :)  (Still WIP):

I have a bunch more and will end up with 11 in total...

Each mech will be attached to one of the squads...the mech in the pic will be added to blue squad which has shotguns and flame-throwers...this mech has a flame-thrower so suits the squad theme :).

: Re: Grymn and Pig-Iron heads = Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso November 14, 2010, 08:30:52 PM
Yep they did...and we used to use a soluble pink paint to cover the helicopters with when they went on desert ops too...

...but back to mechs and I have 'un-pinked' the Brutish Dog and started on the second one too:

I haven't finished either of them but I thought I'd show off a Brutish Dog in duller colours so that you get a bit more of the brute showing.

There are more pix over at Inso's World and also a bit of other information...dare I say 'Scenery'?

I have decided that the next group shot will be when I have got a mech for all of my complete squads...I have 8 complete squads so far.

I have one complete mech, 3 base-coated, 1 assembled, and 6 in boxes...so I need to assemble 3 more and finish painting 6 of them.

When that will be...who knows?

With great hope and a little luck...I embarked on some sculpting...

...and for the first time in months I have been able to sculpt enough to convert another squad of Tunnel Fighters.  Two more battle squads to go :).

This highlights what I have said about continuing to use the same Grymn over and over again whilst waiting, patiently, for the new ones to arrive.

Whether existing Grymn...or Grymn yet to come...Grymn are without equal and are worth every pain/effort to get painted and on the table-top !

Finished  :

Also finished base-coating the last mech:

Another 5 still to go...then actually finish the painting on them all...

...then it will be special units, vehicles and whatever takes my fancy :D.

One more squad to go for the troops to be finished :).

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.

These are the last standard troops for the army...I have 6 medics to finish, then the only Grymn will be those crewing vehicles/mechs.

The final troop unit for the army...a medic unit with an escorted doctor, an escorted medic with scanner and a stretcher party:

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso May 06, 2011, 12:55:57 PM
 :grrr: ... ...

Power-Rangers? ...Now there's an idea for a future project ;) .

Once I get properly busy, they will all end up nice and grey/gunmetal and will be added to each of the squads.

On a separate note...I have a new APC that has just arrived through the post.  I have lovingly sanded it, washed it and it is now sitting waiting for the glue to dry before I add a little filler to the gaps.

It is quite a chunky little beast and I think it goes really well with the tunnel fighters too.  I have swapped the turret for something more appropriate and now all I have to do is decide what colours to paint it...do I go for gunmetal and grey or just go for a grey scheme?  I won't be adding camouflage as they are supposed to be used underground and in the dark, camouflage ain't much cop :) ...

...I am really quite chuffed with the purchase :) .

The turret is from Old Crow...(18mm sized):

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso May 31, 2011, 11:35:11 AM
I would have gone for smaller scale Votoms if they were available at the prices I was paying...but I had to work with what I could get.  I guess it all depends on how you look at things...We have different vehicles for different things so there isn't necessarily a style that goes with humans apart from the fact that there has to be enough ergonomic room for a driver/pilot/rider.

Look at road vehicles...we have everything from sleek racing bikes to Humvees...not to mention all those utility trucks like dustbin lorries and overhead wire repair vehicles.

...I guess we like what we like and the Votoms mechs are some of my favourites, even if they do look a bit like clockwork toys :D.

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.

And this is as far as I got with 1/60 scale Votoms:

A heck of a lot of conversion went into it so it wouldn't be viable to convert a dozen of them.

I must have been a bit distracted...JULY?

I have four more of the APCs on the painting shelf (not quite the table) that just need a bit of dry-brushing before detailing.  Should be done soon...only a couple more mechs to add to those and the army is finished.  I think I may have my Christmas project :) .

See...I started painting these again just because I mentioned them!  I have a way to go on them but have started base-coating bits after dry-brushing the grey:

I seem to recall a thread of yours on them. I have a whole bunch I need to paint up over the christmas break. I'm gonna get some of that army painter dip stuff to make short work of them. What about some Messan's as well. The grunts look rather undergroundish.

It is getting to a point where I can only see gun-metal paint!  I am currently base-coating my last four mechs.

I had forgotten just how tedious the job was :( .  It has also highlighted to me what happens when you water down paint with metallic particles in...oh how I wish I had an airbrush!  Streak free and even coats...I guess we just make do with what we have (a bit like being in the military really ;) ).

On the plus side, I will at least end up with the last of the mechs painted soon...so it isn't all bad !

K9 Squad...complete with transport:

I have started to paint the transport for the drone unit as well.  I've also decided to order a second six-wheeler from Fenris to act as an ambulance for my field medics.  I was going to see if I could find an articulated transport from somewhere but in order to keep things in the same theme, I will convert a Fenris vehicle instead.

I am thinking that I can add a bit of height and extend the rear slightly to give more internal space and maybe add a few extra armoured panels.  It should work and look OK...hopefully .

That will mean that I will have all of the transports sorted (even the OGrymn and his squad will have something...a bit different and I will show it off once the squad is finished) without too much time being wasted searching for something appropriate.

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso June 24, 2012, 05:13:02 PM
I have decided that I will match the Vulkans with the normal squads and have 9 troops and a comms robot. That means that I will need to do a small amount of repainting but what it also means is that I have started to get some more work done for the Tunnel Fighters:

Obviously, the big guy is the leader and the rest are minions. The pic shows two Vulkans that are in the process of having some heavier weapons added to them. They are still WIP but while I was doing those, I have been converting another four heavy weapon arms for the other Vulkans I have.

Now all I need to do is get hold of some large sized, 6-legged robots to act as a comms robot. It needs to look as heavy and armoured as the Vulkans (because it will be counted as an unarmed Vulkan) and I think that I will be going for some RAFM mechs:

http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RAF&Product_Code=RAF02834&Category_Code=USXMin

They look beefy enough and the barrels can be replaced with comms arrays. They will also match the style of the GZG comms robots that I am using in the rest of the squads.

Maybe, one day, I'll finally finish this army :).

Things to finish:

2 Clanker units (9 Clankers + Comms each)
1 special unit (with the OGrymn and a few oddities in it)
1 Ambulance
1 Command Transport (for the special unit)

Not a lot really.
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Ajsalium June 24, 2012, 06:14:44 PM
Do the comms robots need to be six-legged? Because the Infinity game have some rather nice four-legged robots that could work, with minor conversions.

Yaokong remotes (Yu Jing faction):

Zond remotes (Nomads faction):

Although more expensive, you can get some good deals off eBay.
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso June 24, 2012, 07:07:12 PM
Those Infinity mechs are great but I really want the comms-robots to fit in with what I have and that means six legs:

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso July 01, 2012, 09:16:32 AM
I now have two assembled squads of Clankers that just need comms-robots (which are on their way):

I have six more awaiting assemble but I am not sure whether to make them into a specialist unit or wait for three more Vulkans to appear... Hmmm... maybe I should put a trawl out again...
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Mr Teufel July 01, 2012, 10:41:16 AM
Maybe you should make a mining/mole machine (like that one that Thunderbird 2 carried) big enough to drill tunnels for these guys.

Otherwise I struggle to see how these are possibly "Tunnel Fighters"...
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso July 01, 2012, 05:46:19 PM
If you think 'Planet P' from Starship Troopers , then you'll get a better idea of the tunnel fighting that goes on. The tunnels need to be large for the big bugs to move in (and Tyranid Carnifexes and Tervigants) so most of the Tunnel Fighter army will be fine in the tunnels. The tanks and large mechs are for top-side (afetr all, they have to travel to the tunnel sites).

And originally, I just had Grymn troops... called them Tunnel Fighters and then the army grew... so then it went to 'Tunnel Fighters above and below'.
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Mr Teufel July 01, 2012, 10:51:42 PM
I see. They're tunnel-fighters not because they have any love for tunnels, but because the enemy is all about tunnels that you need to go down to get at them.

: leadhead July 02, 2012, 12:11:55 AM
... sometimes you have to pay a lot for what you really want :(

Gotta have what ya gotta have.
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso July 02, 2012, 09:07:35 AM
At no point have I ever wanted to have a tunneller / mole machine... I think that it would make my force too cliched (Squats always had moles).

The reason I went for tunnel fighters was because of the heavy nature of the helmets I have used. They reminded me of an old 2000AD comic (Halo Jones) where there were martian power armour teams fighting in tunnels and the idea stuck.

The trouble is that once I got started, I went a bit mad and thought 'my Votoms mechs suit the style' but then I realised that the mechs would be too tall for tunnels so I then summised that they could be top cover. Then I thought... 'they'll need to be able to get to the tunnel entry points safely so they'll need APCs'. 'But what can they rely on underground if there aren't any tanks?' I thought... Clanker units were perfect for the role because they look really chunky and a bit like heavy machinery... so they joined the army.

So basically, this army has evolved somewhat and although I call them my tunnel fighters, they are more an army that roams the surface of the desert planet, hunting for bug caverns to explore and clear of bugs (namely Tyranid creatures that have limited ranged attack capabilities). They fight in the caverns and tunnels and try to draw the bigger creatures out on to the surface so that the bigger mechs can finish them off.

It is one of the reasons that all of the troops wear sealed helmets with lights on the side (normal and IR) as well.
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso July 02, 2012, 10:49:53 AM
It is funny how a project like this starts and then grows beyond anything you'd normally expect.

I believe it was Sagunt who showed a picture of his similar conversion a couple of years ago. His were designed to be steam-punk and had brass metals and red clothing. The pulseguns were trimmed and they looked the business. I took one look and thought 'I need to build some of those'... so I did.

I went a little further with the conversion by adding humps to the back... but I didn't trim the weapons down (I like the pulseguns :) )... apart from that, I dug out a few spare Grymn and got converting.

At the time, I didn't even have squad sizes worked out. Then, at Salute, I found some little spider drones which I thought would make good comms troops and I bunched what converted troops I had into squads with a leader, a pair of special/heavy weapons and a comms robot... and 10 was about the right size. That meant I had to buy a few extra troops to fill out all of the squads I had... and that took the army to 6 squads. Then I thought... 'I may as well aim for a hundred troops with an additional command squad'...

...additional ideas came and went... tracked units that had walls that fold out and acted as moving barriers... Mystic Panda scouts... robots...

...other ideas stayed... a drone unit, a medical unit, a dog unit (with mini mawes) and a special unit which could include some OGrymn.

Of course, I had to find transport options and although I love the Old Crow range, I found the perfect little vehicles from Scotia Grendel's Kryomek range. They had a dimpled surface that made them look a lot like rocks (which suited the underground theme... even if they just stayed topside). I soon realised that I needed other vehicles to suit specific requiremenets... so the trawl went out and vehicles from Ground Zero Games and Fenris were drafted in. I have also succummed to Old Crow's charm and have a vehicle that will need to be converted for OGrymn use.

As all this was going on, I was trying to find a way of using some of my existing collection of miscellanea in a project of some sort. I had a couple of 1/35th scale VOTOMS troopers and a bunch of Warzone, Vulkan battlesuits that had remained homeless and this project called out to them. That is when I realised that things had really moved on from the small unit of Tunnel Fighters that I started with... so I had a re-think.

I put together a small army of Tyranids and got a picture in my mind of my Tunnel Fighters and their Clanker units charging into large tunnels and caverns to fight the nids.

... and that is where I am at now.

Once I have finished the special squad and its vehicle, the Clanker units and the transport for the medical unit... that will be the army finished.

When that happens... there will be much rejoicing !
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso November 03, 2012, 04:01:27 PM
It has been a while but I am ticking along with this project in the background. I noticed that I haven't posted pix of the two fully assembled Clanker Units so what better way of showing off the comms robots than to do this:

There are two squads in the pic with the bottom group showing the individual troops for a single clanker squad. Add to that, the recent good fortune I had with E-Bay and I have the final squad in kit form:

That means two things:

1. I have the assembly of the last unit as a Christmas project.
2. I never have to buy another Warzone, Bau-haus, Vulkan battlesuit ever again!

There is also movement on one of the character models... but that will be for another post :) .

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso November 10, 2012, 06:06:31 PM
For some reason, I have dug a few Grymn out of the cupboard and chopped their heads off ready for conversion. I have also found a heavy walker and comms robot to go with the troops... so the special squad will consist of:

OGrymn mystic
OGrymn with chain-gun
Heavy walker
Coms robot
Grymn leader with pulse gun
5x Grymn with shotgun

I have a vehicle ready to start once that little group is done.

I reckon that it will take me less time to finish this squad than to assemble the last clanker unit but we'll have to see.

The heavy walker is quite groovy :)

I really don't know.  :scratchhead:

Brown or dark blue.
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Mr Teufel January 11, 2013, 11:58:12 PM
Now it's morning, and I'm (more) awake, I think dark blue is good. Also purple.

I'm glad you like dark blue...

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Mr Teufel January 16, 2013, 12:16:40 PM
Huh. Why don't they have the head and shoulder marks like the green ones?
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso January 16, 2013, 01:11:10 PM
I have yet to wash them with Devlan Mud. Once that is done, they will get the same markings as the others (except blue). The comms robot has a blue bit because getting in the gaps will mean messing up the washed areas so the blue has gone on first (and I'll take a hit with the darker bits where the brush won't reach).
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Mr Teufel January 16, 2013, 01:54:53 PM
When you get them done, could you take close-ups of one of them, so we can see the work you've put into them? Sure, they look imposing grouped up, but your last comment shows we're missing out on the detail.
:)
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso January 19, 2013, 11:11:04 AM
I will happily do as you ask but the problem is that, because they are mostly metallic, the flash kills the details... so you probably still won't get to see how they 'really' look.

But, like I said, I will try to get a few good pix of a shaded one.
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso January 19, 2013, 05:09:47 PM
Obviously still WIP but the one on the left hasn't had the wash, the one on the right has:

It just adds depth and outlines details which is all I am after :)

One more to go now :)
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: ink the troll January 20, 2013, 10:22:36 PM
Blue was a good choice!
What colour have you decided on for the next unit?
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso January 20, 2013, 10:26:38 PM
I was going to go for purple (like the rockets on the leaders) but I don't think I have enough paint... so I am likely to go for a dark brown instead... or maybe a dark red.

They are on the table now, ready to start the base coat... only ten more to go (I keep telling myself)... I love the Clanker mechs but after painting 20, even I am starting to get bored with them... but my goal is SO close !
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Mr Teufel January 20, 2013, 10:49:05 PM
I'd prefer dark red, myself.
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso January 21, 2013, 01:41:54 PM
I'd prefer dark red, myself.

I tend to agree.

The trouble is that I am getting close to the end of certain paints and GW have stopped making them... so I am beginning to have to really think about using certain colours in case I need them for my upcoming Urban Army continuation.

Fortunately there are Coat D'Arms paints that will replace some of the colours but the foundation paints are a different matter (and I will NOT be buying paints from GW any more... how dare they ruin their paint range :( ).
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso January 23, 2013, 09:19:03 PM
They will be purple... I found a second pot of Liche Purple so I have enough to do it now :)

I keep nagging you that your tunnel fighters should have some way of, y'know, digging tunnels.

I've now found the perfect specialist to round out your squads: Duncan. (http://www.taban-miniatures.com/shop2/product_info.php?cPath=48_58&products_id=406)

He's cool but he isn't 'techie' enough. I'd probably go more for this sort of thing if I was going to go tunnelling:

... either that or teams with melta type cutters to melt through the rock.

Ok, that is pretty awesome! Although, being Forgeworld, I bet it's not cheap.

I think you could convert Duncan to match the rest of your mob; but you'd have to be enthusiastic about the idea to do so. Ce la vi.

So... 6 months later and nothing to show.

That said, I have started to paint up my final Vulkan unit again so there may well be something to show off soon.

Then two more vehicles and the army is finished (except for varnish and case-fitting).

It's funny how things work.

We likeses we does.  What do you use for a wash/glaze/shade/filter on your metals to have them look so natural and not overly metal flake paint looking?
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.

The old Devlan Mud wash from GW (Agarix Earthshade I guess now).

Cheers :)

It's one of those colours that either works or doesn't.

I have to-re do the arm plates because I have painted them differently to my other units but you won't be able to tell from the photos anyway.

Just that and the bases to finish now :)... so they should hopefully be finished by the weekend :D

We all go at our own pace :)

I am assembling/converting the medical vehicle today. It is another Marauder vehicle from Fenris and it is getting a bit of an 'ambulance' upgrade. Basic assembly is done and I am just waiting for everything to dry before the gaps get filled and the details added...

The final vehicle will be the awkward one... it needs to be quite tall so that the OGrymn and single battlesuit can feasibly fit into it... but I have a plan :)
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso August 25, 2013, 12:19:21 PM
I'm at that annoying point where I want to finish this off but I am having to wait for the putty to dry :(. As you can see, a few details have been added but I now need to add the front lights, a door opening console on the rear of the vehicle and then do a bit of filling/tidying... nearly there:

: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso August 30, 2013, 04:28:59 PM
I've had to have a change of heart for the final vehicle :( . I was going to use my Old Crow modular vehicle components to build a wheeled command vehicle but alas... earwax :(

It was just too small :(

So... I have dug out my trusty unfinished tank conversions box and have ripped one apart ready for a major upgrade. I do believe that I am going to build me a command vehicle that is capable of housing a pair of OGrymn, a walker and a small unit of standard Grymn. I think it is likely to end up quite tall but will be supported on tracks so it shouldn't look too weird. I am thinking that I may put a crane on it but I'm not sure yet... maybe a comms array and some infantry defense weapons... Hmm.

...The medical vehicle just needs to be top coated and detailed now. It has had the base coat and wash:

I have now finished painting the medical vehicle (apart from the number plates and varnish):

The number plates will be done when I dig all of the vehicles out to sort the mess I made of the plates last time :) .

I also have a WIP of the command vehicle... I have done so much :) :

I'm coming round to the idea of those fenris vehicles.

How do they scale against the 25mm old crow inso?
: Re: Grymn Tunnel Fighters.
: Inso September 01, 2013, 07:23:38 PM
They are bigger than Old Crow. They are also unavailable from Fenris at the moment so if you haven't got any, then you may be unlucky.

Why not put together some of the Old Crow modular vehicles? They are about the same sort of size (for a six wheeler version)?

Lol. But that would involve me doing something other than buying models...

Hard to believe I bought 100 of this modular buildings more than a year ago.... Lol

You can't just stockpile everything... you have to work on stuff eventually :) ... don't you :o?

I have been messing about with magnets again tonight and now have the track unit and the start of the top section as WIP. The tank is VERY big though... but with Ogryn and battlesuits riding in it, I can't see anyway around it (unless it has TARDIS properties :D ).

I'll pop a few pix up when I get further along :)

well... i was thinking of something a little more like skateboard!

but the idea of a (*) walker doing Bambi-on-ice impressions on roller skates does have great appeal...

Now how do I fit that into the theme of ... pick on someone your own size???

I HAVE AN IDEA.... !
